Revealed: RFL’s response to Derek Beaumont’s controversial comments

Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont

After defeat to Leeds Rhinos, Leigh Leopards had a few fair reasons to feel slightly aggrieved. The owner of the Leigh Leopards, Derek Beaumont was clearly not very impressed with the game either.

Derek Beaumont took to X after the match to say: “That is why the game is not investable and needs an absolute overhaul! I have kept quiet till now!”

He added that he would speak at the council meeting next Wednesday as he wants change: “Council meeting Wednesday and I will do my talking there! I will not sit and watch our game be driven into the ground! Fine me but you will not silence me! Game on.”

At the end of last year after a controversial defeat to Wigan Warriors, Beaumont made a similar complaint which was captured after the game in video footage.

He spoke of wealthy friends who could take over the sport and create a rival to Super League. Could he again push this idea after this controversial defeat to the Leeds Rhinos.

Derek Beaumont is a passionate man and a great thinker so it will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont set to avoid punishment

Unlike the last time Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont made these remarks the RFL did punish him but those remarks were far more specific. This time, they weren’t and were simply a warning for the upcoming council meeting on Wednesday.

This is why the RFL will not be taking any action. Instead, their focus will be on seeing what Beaumont has to say on Wednesday.

This should be interesting as both sides of what will be a heated debate want the best for the sport and Super League.

This is perhaps the best way of Derek Beaumont voicing his opinion and it is so good to see a passionate owner.

What next for Beaumont and RFL?

In some ways, Beaumont may be lucky to avoid punishment especially as he himself seemed to be ready to take a punishment based off what he said.

But it will be fascinating to see what he has to say on Wednesday and if his suggestion for a new rival competition are aired once again.

Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if he is able to spark change in the current Super League set up.

It is unclear whether or not it’s the rules or a wider issue that Beaumont wants addressing.
