Tribunal make decision on Michael McIlorum suspension

Catalans Dragons hooker Michael McIlorum

Catalans Dragons received a major blow following their comfortable win over Hull KR at the weekend. The RFL hit Les Dracs with bans to two key players, Michael McIlorum, and Mike McMeeken.

McMeeken received a Grade B charge for Dangerous Contact, resulting in a one match ban. The Dragons did not appeal the verdict. As a result, McMeeken will sit out their game with the Leigh Leopards.

Influential hooker, McIlorum, also received two charges, the first is a Grade B charge for tripping. The second is a Grade B charge for Dangerous Contact, resulting in a two-match ban.

This put McIlorum at risk of missing the trip to the Leigh Sports Village and Catalans’ top of the table clash against Wigan Warriors. Catalans appealed the second charge for Dangerous Contact, hoping to reduce the suspension to one game.

Independent Operational Rules Tribunal verdict announced

The RFL has ruled that they will uphold the suspension originally given by the Super League disciplinary panel, dealing a major blow to the Dragons. A short statement on the RFL website read:

“The independent Operational Rules Tribunal have upheld a Grade B Dangerous Contact charge issued to Michael McIlorum of Catalans Dragons in their Betfred Super League clash against Hull KR. McIlorum pleaded guilty, however, challenged the grading which was unsuccessful, meaning the one-match suspension will be upheld.”

Major Blow for Catalans Dragons

The news is a major blow for the side from Perpignan, as McIlorum will now miss the game against Wigan. Les Dracs rely on McIlorum as a key part of their side, and they will miss his presence in the middle of the pitch.

His suspension means that the Dragons will likely begin the game with an all-French spine. Alrix Da Costa will be responsible for filling the void left by McIlorum.

This is not the first run in McIlorum has had with the disciplinary committee this season. The England International received a four-game ban for a high shot on Joe Philbin in Round 2 against Warrington Wolves.
