NRL star set for huge Super League switch after controversy?

NRL star and Penrith Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny has been at the centre of a controversy that has gotten people asking the question could he make the move to Super League like many other NRL players after controversies of their own.

The hooker had an image posted on social media which said “couple Boxing Day lines have got me in trouble.”

This of course got people talking and speculating that this could see him lose his contract like Ben Barba and others before him resulting in a move to Super League.

However, the hooker has claimed that his phone was stolen and that the post came from some “trolls.”

Fox League spoke to the NRL about the incident to see whether or not it was legitimate and if a punishment was forthcoming,

“The NRL is aware of the matter and will be liaising with the club,” the league said in a statement.

The Panthers have also confirmed the club is aware of the image. This came as Kenny also posted another message on his Instagram stories to say: “Happy New Year guys. Enjoy and ignore trolls who grabbed my phone. Happy New Year.”

Kenny has been a key piece of Penrith’s premiership dynasty and scored a try in the club’s 2023 Grand Final win over the Broncos.

He was promoted to take the No. 9 jumper after star hooker Api Koroisau moved the Tigers.

The 26-year-old is contracted with the Panthers through to the end of the 2024 season and is a free agent on the open market that can sign with any NRL club.

He could be in high demand so long as this doesn’t taint his growing reputation in the NRL which it likely won’t the way things are developing for the hooker.

It remains to be seen if Penrith can keep him unlike Jarome Luai who is headed for Wests Tigers in 2025.
