“Make anybody’s squad better” – Huddersfield Giants talk up reported transfer target

Huddersfield Giants are interested in signing George King

Huddersfield Giants face a crucial clash against Salford Red Devils this weekend. The Red Devils currently occupy sixth place in Super League, with the Giants just two points behind. Victory for either side could be crucial in the race for the play-offs.

However, Huddersfield’s week has been dominated by transfer news. The club has been linked with a move for one of Hull KR’s star men. Now, the club have addressed these links in their pre-Salford press conference.

Huddersfield have had a busy week off-the-field. Captain Luke Yates has been linked with a move away from the club, with Warrington Wolves reportedly interested. Now, the Giants are being linked with a signing from one of their play off rivals.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game against Salford this weekend, assistant coach Luke Robinson spoke of his admiration for KR’s, George King.

“What I can say about him is that I think he’s a really good rugby league player. We’ve had his brother here, he was a top bloke. If he’s anything like his brother, I think he’ll be a really good fella too.

“He tries really hard, puts his best foot forward each and every week. He’s definitely a player that would make anybody’s squad better.”

However, Robinson, who was filling in on media duties with head coach Ian Watson busy, was unwilling to commit on whether Huddersfield are interested in King, stating that the decision sits with the club’s management.

“Yeah, look again, it’s probably above my pay scale” Robinson joked.

“What’s going on with regard to all that stuff is probably a question for the gaffer, not me.”

Robinson admitted that head coach, Ian Watson, was currently working hard on the club’s recruitment plans for next year.

“I think it’s a really busy time. Watto’s doors being a revolving door at the moment? One bloke walks in, another one walks out. It’s just a constant thing.”

However, according to Robinson, part of what makes a good head coach is the ability to manage any off-the-field issues. The ability to prevent these issues from creeping onto the field is something Watson does well.

“That’s the sort of art of being a good coach really. You’re not only just managing what goes on on game day and on the training field but you try to manage the emotions and the psychological aspects of being a professional athlete as well.

“So yeah, some players will, some players won’t, but it’s our job to try and make sure everyone keeps their level ahead and make sure they do the right thing on a Friday, on a Saturday or a Sunday when we play.”
