Leigh Leopards set to complete historic transfer

Leigh Leopards

Leigh Leopards are reportedly set to swoop for another overseas signing ahead of the 2024 Super League season.

The Leopards were linked with a move for Tristan Sailor previously as they look to reinforce their fullback options as well as their options on the wings.

However, this move fell through with the Brisbane Broncos unwilling to release Sailor without having a suitable replacement secured for next season.

Now though, the Leopards have reportedly pivoted to signing David Armstrong from Newcastle Knights who, like Sailor, can play both at fullback and on the wing.

Fox Sports reported: “A Knights rising star has reportedly emerged as a target for Super League team Leigh Leopards.

“David Armstrong was promoted to Newcastle’s top-30 list for 2024 after starring in the NSW Cup for the Knights last season, scoring 15 tries from just 18 games.

“Armstrong is a talented outside back who the Knights are high on and are unlikely to let walk without a fight.

“With the Knights losing a star winger in Dom Young, former Panther Tom Jenkins is expected to slot into the starting side, however he is inexperienced.

“The Knights expect to rely on Armstrong this season. He can play fullback and wing, so will be an option if Jenkins struggles early in the season.

“The 22-year-old may also be required if the likes of Kalyn Ponga and Bradman Best are unavailable due to Origin commitments.”

The Newcastle Herald have also reported the news and there have been reports in the UK from Rugby League Live about the potential transfer.

This would be a ground breaking transfer in Super League as it is likely to exploit the new rules put in place by the RFL.

These rules allow clubs to sign players from down under with limited NRL experience which was previously difficult as players had to have played in half of the prior seasons’ NRL fixtures to qualify for a visa.

Now those rules have been changed allowing clubs to sign players from the NSW Cup and Queensland Cup. This signing therefore could be one of the first to utilise these new rules.
