Leigh boss explains Gelling’s inclusion despite looming trial verdict

Leigh may have gone down valiantly 30-16 to Wigan, but one selection from John Duffy raised the most eyebrows.

Anthony Gelling is currently facing a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm against his ex-partner Toni Mackey at their Widnes home after pleading not guilty.

But, with the jury retiring to consider its verdict on Monday morning, the 30-year-old was still picked in the Centurions side.

When quizzed upon Gelling’s inclusion, Leigh boss John Duffy said: “I don’t want to talk about what going on with Anthony but what I will say is he’s a true professional.”

With crowds back on the agenda, almost 1,600 flocked into the Leigh Sports Village and Duffy could not hid his excitement about the return of supporters.

“I thought our fans were outstanding.

“It was mad walking around the ground beforehand, talking to people, the lads were buzzing after the warm-up.”
