Leeds Rhinos star sent to hospital after Castleford clash

Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos were able to return to winning ways on Thursday night as they defeated the Castleford Tigers in a wet Jungle.

After a scoreless first half, Leeds ran in four tries as Paul Momirovski and Lachie Miller notched their first for the club as well as their second as they both ended the night with braces.

Leeds had to do it tough however losing both James Bentley and Harry Newman to head injuries.

Despite the fact Sky Sports reported Newman had failed his HIA because he was not set to return, it has been confirmed that Newman passed the assessment but had to go to hospital due to the cut the contact left.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith explained: “Newman passed his HIA, the concussion aspect of it.

“But he has got a nasty split to his lip which is going to need a fair few stitches, I’d imagine, when he gets to the hospital. Hopefully there’s nothing else structurally there, but we’ll find out once he goes.”

Smith did confirm that James Bentley failed his HIA and will miss the game against Warrington Wolves next Friday: “Bentley failed his HIA, but he is feeling okay, which is the priority. He will be out for a couple of weeks.”

Leeds Rhinos were also without Tom Holroyd after he picked up an injury against St Helens last week.

The prop picked up a bruised elbow in an incident that saw him sin binned after an altercation with Jack Welsby and Daryl Clark.

Smith explained: “He has got a really badly bruised elbow from the incident last week where, after he grabbed [St Helens’] Jack Welsby, somebody tackled him into the wall and he banged his elbow on the wall.

“We have a lot of middles competing for minutes. Tom played for the good of the team last year through a lot of injuries and kept turning up , but given we had fresh and available people today we didn’t need Tom to do that. He was willing to, but hopefully he recovers and is back in contention next week.”
