Leeds Rhinos reportedly locked in bidding war over Harry Newman

Leeds Rhinos star Harry Newman

Leeds Rhinos are reportedly locked in a bidding war over the future of star player Harry Newman.

The England international stirred up interest in NRL clubs when he was recalled into the England squad at the end of the 2023 season and made his international debut gradually improving in each test until he produced a stunning display complete with a try, an assist and two more involvements in tries against Tonga.

This was around the time that the Daily Telegraph claimed that Newman was back on the radar of NRL clubs and that his agent had put out feelers over a move down under.

The centre is out of contract at the end of the 2024 season meaning he is soon to make a decision on his future. The last time he was nearing the end of his deal at the end of 2021, Newman received interest from NRL clubs and rugby union clubs but Leeds tied him down to a long term deal.

However, with that now expiring the future of the Huddersfield born centre has been raised. Newman didn’t have his best season in 2023. He had some terrific games but was heavily criticised for supposed selfishness against Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup and was later criticised for his attitude in defeat to Catalans Dragons when he was sin binned.

The criticisms came from Sky Sport with Brian Carney even suggesting that Leeds should sell the centre and that it would be better for both parties. It is fair to say Rohan Smith rubbished a suggestion but now, according to the Mole of Wide World of Sports, Leeds are locked in a bidding war over the centre’s future.

Apparently, Super League clubs, Rugby Union clubs and NRL clubs are all interested. Leeds would certainly be kicking themselves if they lose Newman to a Super League rival and it has been suggested that St Helens would make a move given they require a centre.

They signed Newman’s former Headingley centre partner Konrad Hurrell at the end of the 2021 season. Could they soon make a move for Newman?

According to the Mole, every big Super League club is interested in Newman but Leeds are apparently desperate to keep him.
