Journalist reportedly confirms Wigan Warriors star Bevan French’s future

Bevan French are the two words that are seemingly on everyone’s lips in the rugby league fraternity.

From ‘an exceptional deal’ at the Wigan Warriors tabled, to a potentially huge contract offer from Leigh Centurions and then a potential move to the Newcastle Knights in the NRL, French is hot property.

And, is there any wonder why?

The former Parramatta Eels star has been in incredible form in 2022, forming a potent partnership with fellow Australian maverick Jai Field, with the duo running amok in Super League.

Wigan boss Matt Peet had revealed yesterday that no decision has been made yet, but that the club is desperate for the Australian livewire to stay.

“We are waiting for Bevan. He has an exceptional offer from Wigan, and he knows how much he is loved by everyone here,” Peet told Wigan Today.

“I will never tell the players they shouldn’t have ambitions, so it’s about Bevan making a decision.

“We will wait because we really want him to stay. If he does then we will be happy, if he doesn’t then we’ve got plans and we will have to move quickly.

“We won’t be caught out by anything and are prepared either way. It has to be the right decision for us all to give Bevan a bit more time.

“The main reason we want to keep him here is because he’s great to work with. He’s super super talented, but has a special place in the hearts of the fans, his teammates and everyone at the club, so some players are worth waiting for.”

That being said, Newcastle Herald journalist Barry Toohey has seemingly confirmed where French’s future lies.

“Nothing has been announced yet, but he will be here next year on a one-year deal,” Newcastle Herald journalist Barry Toohey said on the Toohey News podcast.

“And they are looking at him being a back-up fullback for Kalyn Ponga but he can also play on the wing – he scored seven tries in that position there a few weeks ago.

“He is more a depth signing than anything else with Edrick Lee leaving.”
