Today marks the first taste of international action for England since late April when they dispatched of France easily by a score of 64-0, however today marked a far tougher test in the shape of Tonga.
Ranked fifth in the world, behind fourth placed England, Tonga arrived in England intent on righting the errors of last year’s World Cup.
Both England and Tonga fell to Samoa at that World Cup in disappointing fashion and this historic three match test series marks a chance for both teams to set the record straight.
The tough Tongan test was made even more difficult when it was confirmed that captain and star player George Williams would be unavailable for the first two tests.
Warrington’s man had appealed his ban but was unsuccessful meaning that England would be without their star half in the opening two games.
Consequently Jack Welsby has been named captain and Hull KR’s Mikey Lewis has made his debut in the halves to replace the Warrington man.
Former Leeds Rhinos legend, and one time Hull KR man, Jamie Peacock spoke on the BBC pre-match about the process that saw Williams not available for selection, going as far to say it meant England were without their best player.
“I think it’s a great decision for George Williams to be captain,” former England captain Peacock explained.
“I think he’s our best players, I think he leads by example. He moves the team around the field and he’s proven at this level.
“He’s a match winner and most importantly he’s got respect from his team and the opposition too.”
Williams had himself spoken with the BBC just prior and expressed his frustration at the ban, but ultimately his trust in those who had been selected instead.
“It’s really frustrating but it is what it is, I’m going to get behind the boys today, and I’m sure they’ll do a good job,” Williams stated.
“There’s some excited boys in there, Waney did a great team talk just before we left the hotel. It was pretty special, you had the chills and I wish I was playing now.”
On his replacement, Mikey Lewis, Williams stated: “It’s a massive game for him. I just said do what you’ve been doing to get yourself here, he’s been one of the standouts in the Super League.
“His running games is a real threat and hopefully we’ll see that today. But yeah, back himself and he’s been doing good.”
Lewis was essential in the opening try that saw England go ahead but just after the 25 minute mark the home side trailed 10-6 after two smart Tongan tries.
