“I’m not sure about that” – Super League boss questions contentious St Helens try

St Helens

St Helens are taking on Catalans Dragons in Perpignan tonight and they currently lead 8-6 at the break but there has been some contention over their second try.

Tommy Makinson looked to score just before the half but there were plenty of arms in the tackle trying to prevent him from grounding the ball.

Regardless, Liam Moore backed himself and awarded the try on-field and didn’t send it to the video referee either meaning the try was awarded, much to the disapproval of the home fans.

The game is being broadcast as part of Sky Sports’ ‘Big Weekend’ but it is also airing on BBC Three, the first ever time the French side have had a Super League game shown on terrestrial TV as explained previously by RL Commercial’s Rhodri Jones.

Salford Red Devils’ coach Paul Rowley is on punditry for BBC Three and he has called into question if the St Helens winger ever actually got the ball down.

Rowley reacted stating: “I think he must have done tremendously well to ground the ball but the referee is on the spot and has said in his words that he has got a clear view, however, the replay will show us.

“Ooosh, as we’re looking at the replay, I’m not sure about the clear view I’ll be honest. To me it looks like there’s arms under it, I’m going to put it out there.

“I think there are hands under it but you’ve got to say that it’s good that the referee is being decisive. He’s told us only what a video ref could tell us anyway, if it goes up as a try and there’s nothing conclusive then the outcome would have been the same.

“Fair play to the referee for giving the clarity and the strength of the decision. Let’s get this game moving.”

Makinson’s try was not converted meaning Saints had failed to fully capitalise on their two scores, only leading by two points in spite of outscoring the hosts two tries to one.

Saints had taken the lead through Jack Welsby before Mike McMeeken hit back as he charged in under the sticks before Makinson’s controversial score. Both sides saw tries ruled out with Tom Johnstone and Jon Bennison deemed in touch.

Is it not time as in Premiership Football and Rugby Union, the video referee as we call them, should advise a referee if he has made a wrong decision, got to say I have not been impressed with the referee last night, so far this season, far too full of himself.
