“I’m gutted for him” – Sam Burgess provides injury update on Warrington Wolves’ youngster

Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves missed the opportunity to go top of Super League yesterday as they lost to Salford Red Devils but more concerning for Sam Burgess’ side was the injury sustained by Leon Hayes.

Hayes had made just three Super League appearances prior to the current season but he’s found plenty of favour under Sam Burgess with the 20-year-old usurping Josh Drinkwater in the halves.

Initially handed a chance due to injury, Hayes’ strong form has meant he’s retained his place and started to form a strong relationship with England captain George Williams.

However, Hayes has now been dealt an injury blow of his own with the 20-year-old being stretchered off in the 60th minute in what looks to be a devastating blow for himself and the club.

The club have now provided an update on Hayes’ condition.

The injury for Hayes saw an immediate hush fall around the stadium with both Salford tacklers and dummy-half Danny Walker calling for immediate medical attention.

Sky Sports opted not to show the replay of the incident but did show Hayes being administered oxygen and applauding the fans who were serenading him with the chant of ‘There’s only one Leon Hayes’.

That was a positive to see and Wire have now provided an update via social media that is also positive.

Warrington Wolves posted on X: “We’re all with you, Leon. Leon Hayes is in good spirits in hospital after being stretchered off during today’s match against Salford. We’ll issue an update on the full extent of his injury in the coming days.”

Sam Burgess also offered an update in his post-match presser with The Warrington Guardian reporting his comments.

“It’s not a great one for him. It’s a tough injury,” Burgess told the media, as reported by The Warrington Guardian.

“We don’t know the full extent yet, but it’s not great – it’s not looking very good at all.

“I’ve spoken to him on the phone and he’s in good spirits – he’s probably more disappointed with the loss, if I’m honest, which shows a lot about his character.

“I’m gutted for him but that’s sport.”

With the medical team seen to strap Hayes’ ankle and the use of oxygen on the field, it was reported initially by commentator Barrie McDermott to be an ankle injury.

McDermott said: “If I’m not mistaken, there may well be damage to the ankle, the bone and the bottom end of the leg. I’ve had that injury.”

That’s now been confirmed by Sam Burgess who told the press: “It’s definitely a dislocation and it looks as though it could be a fracture.

“It’s not looking good so it could be a long time on the sidelines for him. It’s a tough night for everyone.”

Everyone at Serious About Rugby League wishes Leon the very best in his recovery.
