“I hate this” – Castleford Tigers fans devastated by Daryl Powell’s move to Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield Trinity have appointed former Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers boss Daryl Powell as Head Coach on a four year deal.

It was announced yesterday morning (October 23rd) that Mark Applegarth had officially left his role as Head Coach and was leaving the club completely.

Sean Long also left the club. This came hours before confirmation of the takeover by Matthew Ellis who made it clear weeks ago that he was going to appoint Daryl Powell as Head Coach.

True to his word, the announcement of the takeover was joined by the news of Daryl Powell’s arrival as the 2017 Coach of the Year signed a four year deal with the club in a move that shows their ambition.

It is also a move that likely broke the hearts of Castleford Tigers fans as they saw an iconic figure of the club’s recent history in Wakefield club colours.

One fan recalled some more Tigers history and said: “Genuinely can’t spake.”

Another added: “I hate looking at this. Doesn’t look right at all.”

One fan simply said: “My eyes!”

Whilst the notion of it not looking right persisted: “Just doesn’t look right.”

Another fan, perhaps disgruntled by the memories of three major final defeats, took a shot at Powell’s record in terms of silverware: “Championship might be all he wins if he’s lucky”

One fan was very amicable about it: “He’s a great bloke and I wish him well, hopefully we’re better though 😂 We are at the bottom at the moment but I think we’re on our way back up”

But still fans were upset: “That’s just not right.”

And the jibes continued: “Maybe he’ll win a final.”

Wakefield confirmed the news of his appointment with the following statement:

“Wakefield Trinity are proud to announce Daryl Powell as our new Head Coach.

“Daryl is one of the most respected coaches in the game and a former Great Britain international player himself. We believe Daryl Powell is the best possible choice to lead the club into an exciting new chapter. His wealth of experience will be crucial in bringing together the best coaching and playing squad.”
