Former Leeds Rhinos player Aidan Sezer facing suspension

Former Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants half-back Aidan Sezer has been charged for an incident involving ex-Hull KR player Brad Schneider.

The incident occurred during the ninth minute of this weekend’s clash between Sezer’s Wests Tigers and the Penrith Panthers.

Sezer’s tackle on Schnieder has been deemed to be dangerous by the Match Review Committee, with the 32-year-old hit with a Grade 1 Dangerous Contact charge.

Sezer to avoid suspension despite charge

Despite the charge, Sezer can get out of the suspension if he pays a $3,000 fine. This would involve the playmaker accepting an Early Guilty Plea – which he seems likely to do in order to play the next two matches.

It was a tough night for the Tigers at Penrith Stadium as they were beaten 22-6, with former Rovers half-back Schneider impressing in the absence of Nathan Cleary.

It leaves Wests with two wins so far this season, sitting in 13^th place, with their victories coming against Cronulla Sharks and Parramatta Eels – the latter an impressive one-point win at Parramatta Stadium in Round 4.

Sezer’s move from Leeds Rhinos to the Wests Tigers at the end of the season came as a surprise to many, with the former Canberra star struggling during his final two years in Super League.

Despite helping Leeds reach the Super League Grand Final in 2022, his final season for the Rhinos was a disappointment as they missed out on the playoffs, with Sezer’s performance below par for the most part.

At 32 he was looking for a return to the NRL for a final stint and Wests provided him with the opportunity, having not played in Australia’s premier competition since leaving Canberra Raiders for Huddersfield Giants at the end of the 2019 season.

Though in his latter years now, the Tigers have still started Sezer in the no.7 role for all but one of their games this season and he’s repaid the faith with some steady performances.

It remains to be seen if Sezer can guide Wests to a finals spot, with still more questions than answers around their potential in 2024 after a mediocre start.
