Former Leeds Rhinos hooker James Segeyaro leaves Bradford Bulls to join new club

Former Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls hooker James Segeyaro has found a new clubs ahead of the 2024 season in a disappointing blow for the Bulls as they look to develop into a Super League side moving forward.

The hooker has linked up with a new club as confirmed down under this morning with the Bulls left to assemble their squad without the electric hooker.

Segeyaro first arrived in the UK at Leeds Rhinos in 2016. The Rhinos were struggling despite only winning the treble less than a year before.

The Rhinos had lost Kevin Sinfield, Jamie Peacock and Kylie Leuluai but in the eyes of many still had a squad capable of being competitive but spine injuries stretched the Rhinos thin.

Danny McGuire was injured in the opening game but crucially their new hooker Beau Falloon continually picked up injuries as he arrived to replace Paul Aiton who after an excellent two season stint at the club left for the Catalans Dragons.

The situation in the spine and the sudden exit of Zak Hardaker to Penrith Panthers on loan saw Leeds bring in Segeyaro as he made his debut in a shock win over the then league leaders Hull FC.

Segeyaro was an instant fan favourite scoring nine tries in 16 games for the Rhinos and helping them secure their Super League survival and finish the season strongly with his best moment the length of the field try scored against Leigh Centurions.

It was unknown at the time but that was the last time he would play for the Rhinos despite signing a long term deal to stay at the club.

But the hooker departed the club due to home sickness returning to the NRL with Leeds signing Matt Parcell as his replacement who would break the record for the most tries in a season from a hooker in Super League, being named in the Super League Dream Team and winning the Grand Final.

In 2023, Segeyaro returned to Europe in the Elite One Championship in France before joining Bradford before an injury ended his season early.

Now, in a disappointing moment for the Bulls, Segeyaro has left Odsal to join Wests Devils in Illawarra for the 2024 season.
