St Helens legend Tommy Makinson confirms exit to join Super League rivals

St Helens winger Tommy Makinson has sent a heartfelt message out to the club’s fans in which he confirms that he will be leaving the team at the end of the 2024 season.

Makinson has long been rumoured and reported to be on his way to Catalans Dragons at the end of the 2024 season with his contract running down, and whilst the winger doesn’t confirm his destination, he has confirmed his departure.

An emotional ten-minute video has been shared by the club in which Makinson address the Red Vee faithful detailing his decision and also recalling his 14 years at the club.

Debuting in 2011, the 32-year-old has made almost 300 Super League games and racked up a total of 326 appearances in St Helens colours, scoring 199 tries during that journey.

He’ll be hoping to reach 200 by the end of his time with the club and he’s also promised to try and leave the fans with one more trophy to celebrate after having been part of one of the most dominant sides in Super League history.

Describing his exit as “the hardest decision” that he had ever had to make, Makinson was visibly emotional during the ten-minute-long address to the fans that can be viewed here.

He said: “It’s been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, playing here for so long and creating so many special memories. This club has been so good to me, it’s the greatest club of all.”

He’s also promised one last push to add yet another Grand Final trophy to his incredible list of accolades whilst at St Helens, in total claiming a World Club Challenge, a Challenge Cup, four League Leaders’ Shields, and five Super League titles.

Makinson said: “I want to finish on the best possible terms, like I’ve always done I’ll give my absolute all, I want to sign off with a Grand Final win, not selfishly I want to win another Grand Final with this group because we deserve it.

“I think we are a great group, one that holds each other accountable, we work harder than most we pride ourselves on working harder than the rest, and are coached by a great group of staff, and for the people behind the scenes.”

“The bonds that I’ve made with the people of the town, the staff, I could never ever ask for anything more in my wildest dreams from being a 14/15-year-old kid turning up to train at Knowsley Road and fast forward the clocks I’m sat here at 30-odd and we’ve achieved so much together. I am so grateful to you all for that, so thank you.”
