Fans call for IMG to redesign Super League trophy to echo Leeds Rhinos greats

IMG are set to make widespread changes to rugby league.

They are set to bring back licencing to Super League, help international rugby league grow and lessen the number of fixtures in the competition including the end of the Magic Weekend to ensure that the sport isn’t over saturated with big events.

It has also been suggested that the name of the competition could be changed.

However, there is one change fans have been crying out for for some time long before IMG got involved.

That a change to the Super League trophy which has been basically the same since 1996 despite a slight change in 2020 with a new logo added to the front of the silverware.

But fans have been calling for the trophy to be remodelled in a way that would echo that of the NRL trophy.

Fans have wanted a model of Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow, who were honoured by awards at last night’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards on BBC last night, to form the centre of the trophy and after last night’s event these suggestions have gone into overdrive:

It is safe to assume that Super League will be widely changed and this could be one of the changes we could see.

It has also been suggested that the League Leaders’ Shield should be named after Rob Burrow in the years to come, a trophy won by Burrow and Leeds three times in 2004, 2009 and 2015.
