Catalans Dragons winger Tom Johnstone is reportedly set to leave the club at the end of the upcoming season.
Wakefield Trinity are set to make a play for the winger if they secure promotion to Super League this year.
However, they are likely to face competition from Super League clubs across the league but also NRL clubs.
Earlier this year, former Sky Sports commentator Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson claimed NRL clubs were interested and this was echoed by Zero Tackle.
Serious About Rugby League now understands that NRL clubs are likely to pursue the winger at the expiry of his contract like Wakefield.
Johnstone joined Catalans for the 2023 season on a two-year deal. The 28-year-old made his Wakefield debut in March 2015 and has gone on to make 112 appearances, scoring 87 tries whilst at Trinity.
Johnstone also has made his England debut against France in 2018 which he was able to complete a hat-trick on that evening.
The move to Catalans saw him pick up further England appearances with the winger scoring against Tonga in the opening Test Match.
Tom Johnstone said when he signed for the club: “Firstly I want to thank Steve McNamara for the opportunity to come here. Once I’d spoken to him and heard what the club are aspiring to achieve, I knew it was perfect fit for me.
“My main goal is to win a Grand Final and it would be incredible to do that and create history here. I am really excited and grateful for the opportunity to play for such a great club.”
“It’s easy to see the passion the fans have, and I can’t wait to play for them next year.”
Johnstone was named as Super League Rookie of the Year in 2016, as well as being named in the 2018 Dream Team.
Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara said at the time: “We are very happy to add Tom to our squad for next season. He has blistering speed, power and try scoring ability whilst having a desire to continue to develop all parts of his game. He will bring depth and competition to our wing spots in 2023.”
