Exclusive: Leeds Rhinos make decision on potential move for Joe Burgess

Former Wigan Warriors star and Salford Red Devils flyer Joe Burgess is set to join a new club at the start of the 2024 season.

This is according to the Rugby League Live platform who have reported that the winger is set to leave the club after a disciplinary verdict.

Burgess is now available to every Super League club and a player of his calibre who is not a quota player is a player many clubs will be interested in.

One set of fans who immediately jumped onto the news were Leeds fans hoping that the club could sign the winger as a back up to Ash Handley and Derrell Olpherts after reported interest in Lee Kershaw.

However, Serious About Ruby League can reveal that Leeds have ruled themselves out of a move for the Salford Red Devils winger. So the question remains where the Salford star will end up.

Since joining the club from Wigan Warriors in late-2020, Burgess has gone from strength to strength. The 28-year-old has been a mainstay on the wing for Paul Rowley and formed a lethal left-edge partnership with Samoan World Cup finalist, Tim Lafai.

He scored 16 tries in 2022, with his consistency and athleticism vital in Salford’s run to the play-off semi-final. His hat-trick against Castleford Tigers back in May was a particular highlight, with each try showing just how much the Red Devils utilise his electric pace.

However, he is now set to join a new club ahead of the 2024 season after a disciplinary verdict. A disappointing ending for the young man at the club who was delighted to sign a three year deal with the club at the start of 2023.

Burgess said at the time: “I’m delighted to extend my stay at Salford Red Devils. It is very enjoyable working with this group of people – bosh!”

Head Coach, Paul Rowley has added: “It is fantastic news that Budgie is staying with our group.

“He is an experienced competitor who knows what winning looks and feels like. His fingerprints are on many of our special moments – and the group and I look forward to him being a part of many more.”
