Ex-St Helens star Regan Grace begins training with new club

Super League

When Regan Grace broke through in 2017 he seemed to take the rugby league world by storm, however the surprise move to rugby union has seen him fare less well with injuries hindering his career.

The ex-St Helens man is now training with a new club after his contract with French side Racing 92 was ended following his initial code switch.

Grace made the move from league to union back in 2022, swapping St Helens for Paris as he joined French powerhouse Racing 92, however the Welsh winger never managed a game for the outfit.

That’s because he had suffered a ruptured achilles, something that he never quite recovered from and kept re-injuring during his time with the French side with a major setback occurring in February.

The question of what if hangs heavy over Grace’s career in league given his electric start and obviously over the question of had he been healthy, his incredible tally of 88 tries in 142 games for Saints by the age of 24 being mightily impressive.

It’s now been revealed by Somerset Live that the Grace has been training with Bath as he rehabs his way back from injury, something that’s also been confirmed by the club’s Director of Rugby Johann van Graan.

Grace’s setback in February saw Racing release him in the summer, leaving the club without having played a game for them meaning he’s still yet to play a game of union since his code switch.

It’s an immense shame for someone so talented to have such traumatic injury issues but now that he’s with Bath there remains a chance he could get his career back on track.

Bath’s van Graan explained to Somerset Live: “Regan came to my attention as an ex-league player. We have assisted him by giving him some advice in terms of his medical situation but there is no formal agreement. He is player who I have seen has a lot of speed and a good rugby background. We have been giving him some advice and helping him with his rehab.

“He has not been with the team, it is not even a team thing. If that develops into something further down the line we will see where it goes. At this stage it is a player who has had a very unfortunate circumstance with the injuries that he has had and he came to my attention [through his ex-teammate Russell] and we had a coffee together, and what a nice man he is. If I can help a player with his future then I always do that. If something comes out of it then brilliant, but for now we are helping him with his rehab.

“He has had some serious setbacks in terms of his leg, so I wouldn’t want to speculate [about when he will play again], I would say he is still months away so from our side if we can help him, and maybe he does a few training sessions with us when that becomes a possibility and we will make our decisions along the line but at this stage, I have nothing more to report.”
