Ex- Sky Sports pundit Eddie Hemmings questions Jai Field’s comments about wanting to return to the NRL

Wigan Warriors’ Jai Field has quickly become something of a superstar in 2022.

After enduring a nightmare 2021 in Super League following a number of huge injuries, Field has come back with a bang and then some this year.

The livewire fullback is leading the Man of Steel leaderboard and is quickly developing a reputation for being one of the most destructive stars in the competition.

Wigan managed to tie Field down on a two-year contract, but now Eddie Hemmings has questioned why, after signing this deal, Field declared he wanted to return to the NRL.

Field told Rugby League Live: “I’m loving my time at Wigan, but going back to play in the NRL is definitely something down the track that I want to do again.

“I want to make a name for myself here first and foremost because obviously I didn’t play much first-grade in the NRL before I came to England.

“He’s walking away with the Man of Steel, he signed a two-year extension at Wigan and he’s chosen this week to say his ambition is to go back to the NRL and prove himself – he’s proving himself in Super League,” Hemmings said on the Eddie and Stevo podcast.

“He’s just signed a new deal, he’s got two and half seasons to serve in this country, why say it now? Why not until the end of 2024?”

However, Stevo was quick to jump to Field’s defences.

“You can’t blame him, he wants to go back and makes sure everyone in Australia says they’ve made a mistake and that he is international standard.

“Deep down he wants the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane fans to say ‘boy this guy is world class’. you cannot stop a man from wanting to prove those where he was born and bred.”

Eddie hemmings never talked sense when he was a commentator and hoped we’d heard the last of him since he retired but no, he’s still hasn’t a clue what he’s talking about
