Disgraced NRL star set to make huge Super League transfer

Junior Amone was convicted of his part in a hammer attacj

NRL star Junior Amone is likely set to test the waters in Super League after his NRL contract was effectively torn up.

Despite being on a deal worth $500,ooo, Amone has had his deal effectively terminated by the NRL who have reregistered the player ahead of 2024. This comes after he was found guilty of threatening a man with a hammer alongside his father.

Amone avoided jail time but has been handed a correctional sentence with 300 hours of community service. He has now been denied the ability to play in the NRL next year.

The NRL made the following statement: “The National Rugby League (NRL) has today issued a Notice to St George Illawarra Dragons player Talatau Junior Amone under the NRL Playing Contract and Remuneration Rules.

“On 11 December, 2023 the player was sentenced in Wollongong Local Court to two years imprisonment by way of an intensive corrections order and 300 hours of community service.

“This sentence followed Amone’s conviction on charges of Intimidation and Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm in Company relating to an incident at Warrawong on 15 November 2022.

“Additionally, the player was fined $1,000 by the Court for a charge of Destroy or Damage Property and ordered to pay compensation to the victim.

“The NRL’s wellbeing and counselling services have been made available to the player.”

With no club set for 2024 now, Amone may do what many players barred from the NRL have done in the past and make the move to Super League.

Ben Barba did so in 2017 signing for St Helens before leaving to return to the NRL at the end of 2018. Meanwhile, centre Curtis Scott is attempting to make a similar move right now.

Both Salford Red Devils and St Helens have quota spots available and could make a move for the play whilst Catalans Dragons’ recruitment is up in the air.

They would likely be interested but their last quota spot was taken by Siua Taukeiaho after he was denied his move to Canterbury Bulldogs. He may still leave allowing a quota spot to be opened for Amone ahead of next year. Could we see the versatile stand off feature in Super League in 2024?
