“Disappointed” Sam Burgess not happy with Warrington Wolves defeat

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess Super League

Sam Burgess spoke about Warrington Wolves and their defeat to Leigh Leopards on the club’s official website.

The Wolves lost 28-12 in Joe Philbin’s testimonial match against the Leopards at the Halliwell Jones.

With the two teams starting the game with pretty much their strongest line-ups, it was a worrying result for the Wolves and for Burgess who said: “We weren’t what I thought we were going to be, so we’ve got a bit of work to do. I thought they were probably more physical than us on both sides of the ball, so we didn’t have much right to play.

“Not much to be pleased about on there. Not much really, we’ve got a bit of work to do. Like I said, I’m just probably disappointed we lost the collision, especially for Joe on his testimonial. He’s a really popular character on the team, so I reckon the guys will be disappointed as well.

“I’m glad it’s done and not for two points, so we’ll just rest up, get ready for Catalans in two weeks’ time.”

Warrington Wolves played essentially two 13s in the game and Burgess addressed this saying: “Yeah, we had two 13s out just first half, second half sort of thing.”

This led him to speak about the performance suggesting his side may not be as ready as he wanted for Round One against Catalans Dragons: “I don’t know, we had some good moments but we just weren’t willing to get in the grind as much. Leigh were brilliant, I thought they had middle but I as I say they were really strong, dominated the game really. We’ll take a great lesson out of it, we’ll take something from it.”

It is a new era at the Wolves but this is very different from the fast start from the Wolves to start the 2023 season when they battered Leeds Rhinos in Round One.
