Warrington Wolves fans concerned after Leigh Leopards defeat

Warrington Wolves final pre-season fixture before the new Super League season ended in defeat to Leigh Leopards.

The game doubled as Joe Philbin’s Testimonial as our prop forward celebrates his 11th season for the club.

Tries from Josh Charnley and Zak Hardaker put the Leopards in front before James Harrison pulled a try back before the break.

Matt Moylan, Umyla Hanley and Tom Nisbet finished all crossed for the visitors in the second half with young winger Frank Sergent crossing for the Wire.

Following a guard of honour for the Testimonial man it was down to business. New signings Zane Musgrove and Lachlan Fitzgibbon made their first Warrington appearances with Sam Powell coming on off the bench.

The visitors got off to the strongest start and were over inside three minutes as former Wire winger Josh Charnley finished off a move down the left in the corner.

Zak Hardaker doubled the lead with a try himself as Matt Moylan built off the back of a break from John Asiata.

James Harrison scored before the break to make it 12-6. In the second half, a debut try for Moylan extended Leigh’s lead before he assisted Umyla Hanley to make it 22-6.

A try for Sergent made it 22-12 before Tom Nisbet wrapped things up for Leigh at the end with a 22-12 win.

After the defeat, Warrington fans weren’t too pleased and a little worried about the performance and the 2024 season.

One fan took to X, he said: “I can’t help but feel we’re terribly underprepared for Round One after that performance. Connor Wrench was the only positive for me.”

Another added: “Getting schooled by Leigh in a pre-season friendly.”

Meanwhile, a number of fans said the same thing: “It’s going to be a long season ahead.” This was repeated, “It is going to be a long season ahead.”

One rival fan joked with the typical response: “This year is definitely going to be your year.”
