Cornwall RLFC sign former Huddersfield Giants youngster

Cornwall have been making massive waves recently.

The newest club on the block have sold out the seating section of their ground in their first two home games of the season and continue to recruit shrewdly including four loan signings from Leeds Rhinos including the highly rated Oli Field and Joe Gibbons who is the son of former Leeds player David Gibbons.

They were joined by a further two young Rhinos who have big futures at the club in Joe Hird and Mackenzie Turner and today Cornwall have announced another signing in the shape of young Welsh backrow Will Odgers.

The 19-year-old is formerly of Huddersfield Giants’ academy before joining West Wales Raiders ahead of this season but has now made the switch to their Betfred League 1 rivals Cornwall.

He could make his debut against Hunslet this weekend and is excited by the prospect of playing for Cornwall.

“This is my first season in senior rugby after leaving the Huddersfield academy and I’m delighted to have signed for Cornwall,” he told their club website, “I’m buzzing to be part of this opportunity and I have always believed that in life you only have a few chances, but you must take them with both hands.

“Cornwall is definitely one of those moments for me and I can’t wait to get cracking under Neil Kelly (Cornwall RLFC head coach). He is a massively respected and distinguished coach and I believe that I will learn a lot from his guidance.

“Neil and the other people involved with the club really seem to be moving it in the right direction and I can’t wait to be a part of that.

“Cornwall is a place that I have visited regularly over the years so I know what it’s like and I am sure I will love it. Playing rugby in such a lovely place will help my own development with the club. I want to be with Cornwall for the long term and if everything goes well, it will help with my dream of playing for Wales at senior level.”

His new Head Coach Neil Kelly added: “Will spent time at Huddersfield’s academy which gives him that rugby league experience and background. At a time where we have suffered some injuries to our middles, his arrival is a welcome boost for the club and my squad.

“He came down to train with the lads earlier this week and we moved quickly to secure his services. Will fitted in with the group straight away and I am looking forward to seeing what he can do as a footballer.”
