Commentator claims Castleford Tigers headed for relegation

Castleford Tigers' Jacob Miller dejected as his side lets another try in against Huddersfield.

Castleford Tigers suffered exactly the kind of defeat they did not want as they lost 50-8 to Huddersfield Giants leaving them without a win four games into the season and joint bottom with Leigh Leopards and London Broncos.

Huddersfield Giants headed to The Jungle, a stadium that Ian Watson had revealed was among his favourites in Super League and he’ll have certainly enjoyed his night there with the Giants running out as 50-8 winners.

Castleford Tigers went behind early on and the Giants piled the pressure on to lead 24-4 at halftime but it was the second-half where Castleford truly collapsed.

Having pulled one back through Innes Senior they were then outscored 26-0 with all five of the Huddersfield tries coming in the final 15 minutes to put Craig Lingard’s side to the sword.

That level of collapse perhaps came in part due to injury issues the club are undergoing, but it’s still a shocking statistic and one that has seen plenty of fans turn on the club.

It was a good night for Adam Swift, Leroy Cudjoe and Sam Halsall who all bagged braces as Tui Lolohea set up a lovely try for Kevin Naiqama.

Huddersfield will be delighted with the win but Castleford Tigers fans have been left concerned.

Castleford Tigers facing relegation says commentator

West Yorkshire Radio rugby league commentator The Game Caller, who is best known for his coverage of the Bradford Bulls and his transfer exclusives, now believes that Castleford Tigers are in real danger of relegation in 2024.

IMG have of course ended traditional promotion and relegation but clubs can lose their Super League status to rivals depending on their IMG score and the Castleford Tigers finished outside the top 12 last year, admittedly due to an administrative error.

Nonetheless, they are down near the top Championship clubs like rivals Wakefield Trinity and The Game Caller believes they could lose their Super League standing as he said on X:

“The worrying signs that we all predicted for Castleford are staring everyone in the face. Similar to Wakefield prior to the Matt Ellis takeover, there are many great people working at the club with limited resources, people who deserve much better support from the owner.

“No on-field relegation in 2024 but the signs are that they are seemingly heading for the Championship in 2025.”

This kind of criticism is oddly timed however with the club taking massive steps towards stadium redevelopment and have received financial backing from a new director.

It may be a case of the on field results driving disdain up the food chain to the owners.

There is rugby outside Super League.
The lofty ideals have not resulted in an equalisation.
The top table Wigan, Saint’s, Warrington and Leeds are still the only names which end up Champions.
Catalan are challenging to join them but the cost of these fixtures along with warped loop fixtures then add IMG into the equation our great sport is loosing it’s heritage
