Challenge Cup Final Four: How each team’s last semi-final appearance went

Today, the Challenge Cup semi-finals will take centre stage at Elland Road with Huddersfield and Hull KR locking horns before rivals St Helens and Wigan meet with a place in the final up for grabs.

All four teams have enjoyed varying degrees of success in the Challenge Cup but will certainly be dreaming of the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium and lifting the oldest trophy in rugby league history.

But how did each team get on the last time they played in a Challenge Cup semi-final? We’re answering that question today.

Huddersfield Giants – 2012
The last time Huddersfield played in a semi-final was 10 years ago and didn’t end well. The Giants had started that particular campaign strongly but their form over summer had dipped culminating in a resounding 33-6 defeat to Warrington in the semi-final which helped spell the end of Nathan Brown’s tenure as coach. The last time Huddersfield won a Challenge Cup semi-final was a surprise win over then holder St Helens 24-14 in 2009.

Hull KR – 2015
The Robins produced a major cup upset in 2015 when they defeated Warrington at Headingley to book their place in the Challenge Cup Final. Hull KR defeated the Wolves – who were then coached by current Hull KR boss Tony Smith – 26-18. Unfortunately, the final didn’t go so well as they lost to Leeds in record breaking fashion conceding 50 and failing to get on the scoreboard.

Wigan Warriors – 2020
Wigan dramatically fell at the semi-final stage of the competition just two years ago when they were soundly beaten by Leeds at the Totally Wicked Stadium. In the pouring rain, Leeds had too much for the Warriors in every department storming into a 26-0 lead thanks to tries from Tom Briscoe, Rhyse Martin and two from Ash Handley. Two late consolation tries did little to dent Leeds’ dominance. The last time Wigan won a Challenge Cup semi-final was in 2o17 when they defeated Salford on the road to Wembley.

St Helens – 2021
A year ago, St Helens defeated Hull FC 33-18 with a Regan Grace intercept try proving crucial in Kristian Woolf’s men booking a place in the Wembley showpiece. In the final, they ended their 13-year wait to lift the Challenge Cup.
