Castleford Tigers finally receive IMG appeal verdict

Castleford Tigers

When the first ever IMG grades were revealed, Castleford Tigers were one of two Super League clubs who missed out on the all important top 12 positions.

If the same occurs in 2024, they will lose their Super League status. The Tigers finished 13th and were one of three Super League clubs who finished beneath Championship sides in the rankings.

Wakefield Trinity and Toulouse Olympique finished 10th and 11th with Leigh Leopards finishing in the top 12 just by taking 12th spot.

Castleford finished 13th whilst London Broncos were way off the Super League pace despite their promotion. The Broncos finished 24th in the standings.

Both Castleford and Broncos have taken massive steps following this. The Broncos have ended their academy to use the money in other areas with a view to ensuring they improve their IMG score.

Castleford meanwhile appealed the verdict after an error was made in terms of the collection of the date.

After weeks of waiting the appeal verdict has been revealed and Castleford Tigers have been informed that their indicative grading score for 2024 will not be reconsidered. The club requested an exemption to resubmit their Data Capture Form, having discovered after their initial submission that it had not contained the correct data.

The RFL said: “While sympathetic to their position and recognising that the resubmission would lead to an increase in the club’s indicative grading score, the RFL Board have ruled that it would be unfair to other clubs – several of whom have also sought unsuccessfully to have data submitted after the deadline considered – to make changes after the indicative gradings have been published.

“This was one of the reasons the indicative grading process has been run in 2023 – as a dry run, with no bearing on teams’ positions for the 2024 season, but to give all clubs a clear idea of where they stand, and where they need to improve.”
