Agar gives honest update on Callum McLelland’s future

It’s been no secret that speculation about Leeds halfback Callum McLelland allegedly moving to Castleford for 2022 and beyond has been rife in recent weeks.

But, Rhinos boss Richard Agar was clear about wanting the youngster to stay at Headingley.

“It’s up to him to decide; I’ve had a conversation with Callum and we would like him here next year,” Agar said.

“I think there’s an option on his contract and we’ve indicated that we would love to have him here, but we’ve got to be realistic and got to say if Callum sees a better opportunity then realistically he may want to take that.

“I know there’s a rumour about Cas, but we’ve had a conversation saying we want him there.”

Agar was, however, keen to stress that McLelland is not guaranteed a starting spot at Leeds going forward.

“Of course the rest of the season will decide where we see him in our pecking order and how much pressure he can put on our starting players.

“We’re not fluffing around with the situation, does he see the opportunity as the right one to stay here or does he see a place where he will play more?

“Contract value may come into it. but we definitely want to keep him.”
