Catalans Dragons became the first French side to lift the Challenge Cup in 2018 and it seems that the Perpignan side are set to target it again with Tyrone May confirming it’s a definite target for the Dragons.
May featured 25 times for the Dragons in his first season since arriving from the NRL and that earned him a World Cup call-up to Matt Parish’s Samoa side.
Ultimately though, May suffered a horror hip dislocation in the opener against England but he’s back in pre-season now and has expressed his desire to lift trophies with the French side.
No stranger to silverware, May was one of the members of the Penrith Panthers’ side that lifted the NRL Grand Final in 2021 prior to his transfer, making the Samoan a huge coup for the French outfit.
Speaking to the Sportsman Rugby League’s Youtube Channel, May was keen to address the intentions of Steve McNamara’s side.
“There are three or four teams that have genuine prospects of winning the comp )(Super League) and if we’re honest as club we know that we’re one of them.
“In 2018 they won it (Challenge Cup) and we only spoke the other day about wanting to try win that again, when that comes around we’ll put our best foot forward.
“For us we want to win the Challenge Cup, try and win the Super League and get the League Leaders but we have to get our words and put them into actions.”
Catalans will have to deal with the loss of numerous key players, not least playmaker Josh Drinkwater and the two enforces Gil Dudson and Sam Kasiano to Warrington Wolves whilst plenty of others have left.
A run in the Challenge Cup seems something the side are intent on judging by May’s comments but the French side have failed to make it beyond the quarter-finals since their maiden victory in 2018.
