Warrington Wolves told they “need” specific kind of assistant for Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves have replaced former Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers coach Daryl Powell with Sam Burgess for 2024.

It is one of the most astonishing appointments in Super League history for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, Sam Burgess is one of the biggest names in rugby league, maybe even rugby in general.

the former Bradford Bulls man made himself perhaps the best forward on the planet in the NRL with South Sydney Rabbitohs winning the 2014 Grand Final and the Man of the Match with a broken cheekbone.

A legend of the club, Burgess has been South Sydney Rabbitohs assistant coach but Warrington will be his head coach role which is another reason for the surprise behind the appointment.

Thus, the Wolves have been implored to make a very specific appointment as his assistant coach.

The notorious Mole, who helped break the news, has called on the Wolves to appoint an experienced assistant.

“Sammy B is gonna need a couple of experienced assistants at Warrington.”

The club are expected to appoint Sean Long after his shock Featherstone Rovers exit this week.

Burgess will join the Wire for the 2024 Super League season having agreed a two-year contract.

Following his retirement from a decorated playing career in 2019, Burgess has transitioned into the coaching set-up at South Sydney Rabbitohs, currently working as an Assistant Coach for the NRL side.

Burgess is one of the most renowned and respected leaders in the global game. The former England captain famously led the Rabbitohs to the 2014 NRL title, being awarded the Clive Churchill Medal despite suffering a broken cheekbone in the opening minute.

He represented England and Great Britain on 26 occasions during his playing career and captained the national team to the World Cup Final in 2017 under the stewardship of Wayne Bennett.
