Warrington Wolves tipped to make shock play for NRL coach

Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants were all linked with former St Helens boss Justin Holbrook earlier this year.

The former St Helens boss made his name in Super League from 2017-19. He turned things around for Saints in 2017 guiding them to within touching distance of the Grand Final and in 2018 they arguably should have played in both major finals but they came up short on both occasions.

In 2019 the treble beckoned. Though he didn’t deliver, he did lead Saints to their first Grand Final win in five years and starting this incredible run before joining Gold Coast Titans in 2020.

But in 2023 he was let go and Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks linked him with a move to Leeds, Huddersfield or Warrington.

Huddersfield quickly shut down these “malicious” rumours as did Warrington.

However, their position has changed with the departure of Daryl Powell.

The club made the following statement following a shock defeat to Wakefield Trinity:

Warrington Wolves can confirm that Daryl Powell has left his position as Head Coach by mutual consent along with Assistant Ryan Sheridan.

The Club will now begin the process of selecting a new Head Coach with Gary Chambers in interim charge, supported by Richard Marshall, until an appointment is made.

Warrington Wolves Chairman Stuart Middleton said: “We’d like to thank Daryl for his commitment and endeavours since joining the club last season but we feel the team now needs a different approach.

“Results and performances over the past 18 months have fallen short of the standard we expect and feel the club now needs to move in a new direction.

“We will now begin a thorough process to select a new Head Coach to take the club forward.

“We still firmly believe this playing group have the ability to compete at the highest level.”

The Wolves made their move for Holbrook yesterday with the Mole and Andrew Voss revealing that the Wire made an offer for the former Saints boss believed to be a four year contract but the Daily Telegraph reported that that had been turned down.

Thus, the Wolves will have to consider an alternative and have been linked with Paul Rowley of Salford Red Devils by some.

Now the Mole has Tipped them to move for former Cronulla Sharks boss John Morris.

Morris retired from the sport with the Sharks in 2014 after over 100 appearances for the club and coached them from 2019 to 2021 winning 24 of 51 games in charge.

He is currently at South Sydney Rabbitohs but the Mole has told fans not to be surprised to see the Wolves move for him.
