Warrington Wolves seemingly set to bring back star man from Super League rivals

The immediate future of Warrington Wolves and Hull FC star Matty Russell is up in the air.

Russell returned to the club he featured for in 2012 on loan from the Warrington Wolves impressing on debut for Hull FC against London Broncos.

He went on to feature for Hull FC against Catalans Dragons before he went off with a pec injury. This has left his immediate future up in the air.

Tony Smith spoke about Russell on BBC Radio Humberside: “I can’t tell you the grading of it but he’s damaged his back. He’s back at Warrington with their medical staff and we’re very, very sorry that he’s gone back with an injury and that wasn’t the intention. He was here to play himself in a form so he could go back and play for his parent club. So we’re disappointed for Matty, we’re disappointed for Warrington, we’re grateful for them to loan Matty to us but it’s part of our sport sometimes, it doesn’t always go as planned.”

The club confirmed the situation on Russell after the announcement that Joe Bullock was returning to Warrington.

The club included in their statement: “Fellow loanee Matty Russell will have his pectoral injury assessed by both clubs in the coming days.”

It does seem that he is likely to come bac to Warrington however.

Despite the loss of Joe Bullock back to Warrington, Tony Smith paid tribute to both players.

He said: “Yeah, he’s a good pro. He’s played tough, he’s a no-nonsense player. He gets out there and does his job and he’s been doing it well. He’s added a bit of size and impact for us off the bench. He’s been good. He’s been very good.

“So has Matty. Matty was terrific until he got injured and I’m very, very grateful for those bodies. We’ve got some young guys who are getting some game time, which is great. We’ve just got to be careful of how many at one time. And that’s why it’s been important for Joe to come in and give us some of that experience, particularly in the forwards.”

It remains to be seen what will happen to Russell.
