Warrington Wolves seemingly tease the appointment of Sean Long

In a huge shock last night Warrington Wolves have appointed Sam Burgess as their new head coach for the 2024 and 2025 season as the replace former Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers coach Daryl Powell.

Powell took charge of the Wolves last year after leaving behind the Tigers. There were high expectations of the Wolves under Powell but the first year was a struggle as it became clear that it was a rebuilding year more than anything and the rebuild appeared to be successful when they started the season with eight wins in a row but things soon unravelled and a change was made,

The Wolves initially targeted Justin Holbrook offering the former St Helens coach and Super League Champion a long term deal but he turned them down to sign for Sydney Roosters.

They then went hard for Sam Burgess and if reports are to be believed Sean Long as well.

Long was let go by Featherstone Rovers last night and Warrington may have teased his appointment last night.

They made the following statement:

Burgess will join the Wire for the 2024 Super League season having agreed a two-year contract.

Following his retirement from a decorated playing career in 2019, Burgess has transitioned into the coaching set-up at South Sydney Rabbitohs, currently working as an Assistant Coach for the NRL side.

Burgess is one of the most renowned and respected leaders in the global game. The former England captain famously led the Rabbitohs to the 2014 NRL title, being awarded the Clive Churchill Medal despite suffering a broken cheekbone in the opening minute.

He represented England and Great Britain on 26 occasions during his playing career and captained the national team to the World Cup Final in 2017 under the stewardship of Wayne Bennett.
