Warrington Wolves: George Williams decision made after two-game absence

Warrington Wolves

It’s Super League Rivals Round and that sees Warrington Wolves welcome Catalans Dragons to the Halliwell Jones Stadium in a reverse of the Round One fixture.

Warrington Wolves travelled to Perpignan for that game and they were defeated 16-10 despite leading for much of the first half and playing against 12 men for almost the entirety of the second forty.

It led to plenty of questions about Warrington under Sam Burgess but since then the club have answered those questions resoundingly with five straight wins, scoring 100 points and conceding just eight across their last two games. That impressive start has caught the eyes of those down under with Burgess having to respond to rumours he could be poached by an NRL side.

Those two recent huge wins came against London Broncos and Saturday’s clash with Catalans will be a far tougher test but could see the Wire reclaim top spot in Super League from whoever wins the Good Friday derby.

Burgess has now named his 21-man squad for the game and the big question mark of recent weeks has surrounded England captain George Williams who hasn’t played since the Round Four win over Hull KR.

The squad news is positive news for Warrington fans with George Williams and Josh Drinkwater both returning which will give Sam Burgess a choice of who misses out after Leon Hayes’ impressive performances of late.

Williams will be a lock in the halves providing he is fully fit so there will likely be a call made between the young talented Hayes and the veteran Drinkwater, who formerly played for Catalans Dragons.

Burgess will also have to consider Stefan Ratchford who has been on excellent form and also provides incredible kicking accuracy with the veteran having equalled a world record for most consecutive conversions in the Round Five game against London Broncos.

Matty Nicholson is named in the squad again after making his return last week whilst Rodrick Tai also features after scoring on his debut last week.

Lachlan Fitzgibbon is another major name that will feature after missing recent games with Warrington looking close to full strength for the clash on Saturday afternoon.

As for Catalans, there is no Arthur Mourgue but Tariq Sims and Bailey Sironen return which will create an intriguing battle in the middle of the park between two of the strongest packs in Super League.
