Huddersfield Giants forward Fenton Rogers has been arrested and charged for offences of drink driving and the alleged assault of an emergency worker.

News of Rogers’ incident with the police was confirmed by Huddersfield with the Giants issuing a statement late on Friday night revealing that young forward Rogers would be suspended pending an investigation.

Huddersfield had reported that the 20-year-old had been “detained for questioning” after an incident as part of a statement released on their club website.

It read: “The club were made aware on Friday morning by Fenton Rogers of an incident the previous day which led to him being detained for questioning by the police.

“The club has suspended him with immediate effect pending the outcome of their own investigation.

“No further comment will be made at this stage.”

Rogers had been recalled from his loan deal at London Broncos and named in Huddersfield’s squad to face the Broncos this weekend but he will presumably no longer feature given the club’s confirmation of his suspension.

News of Rogers’ arrest had actually also been confirmed by the police even earlier than when Huddersfield Giants did so, with Oldham Police’s X account providing the update just after midday on Friday.

They posted: “Bank Holiday weekend off to a swing with drink driver arrested and police officer assaulted At 12:30am this morning (Friday 29 March), officers spotted a vehicle driving dangerously on Platting Road, Saddleworth.

“CHARGED: Fenton Rogers (04/08/2003) of Wrigley Street, Oldham has been charged with drink driving and has been bailed in relation to an assault of an emergency worker. The 20-year-old has been bailed ahead of scheduled appearance at Tameside Magistrates Court on 16/05/2024.”

This news was reported by the Saddleworth Independent confirming the charges to Rogers.

Rogers played much of the 2023 season on loan with Bradford Bulls in the Championship and his impressive performances that year saw him handed a three-year contract by Huddersfield Giants.

Such impressive form has seen him feature for the Giants in their 21-man squads this season and he has in fact played in the last three Super League games, putting together a formidable run of form.

He had even started in the past two games but his status is now unclear after his suspension by the club and his court date set for the middle of May.

At the time of his contract extension, Ian Watson had outlined the plans to get Rogers embedded into the first team throughout the 2024 season.

Watson said: “Fenton came into the group and made his First Team debut in a hostile environment vs a physical and strong Wigan team, and he handled himself well and put his best foot forward for the future.

“The perfect scenario for Fenton is for us to continue to monitor him on loan, and maybe to get him into the First Team before the end of the season and for that to continue into 2024.”
