Unlikely name tops the Man of Steel leaderboard after round three

Paul McShane holds the Man of Steel award

There’s an unlikely frontrunner in the Man of Steel ranking following the third round of Super League fixtures.

Following the third set of fixtures, the points for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel award have been dished out with some unexpected names making the list as well as those who seem to always be in the mix.

Here’s a comprehensive list of all the point scorers from Round Three, followed by the overall ranking over the season so far.

St Helens v Leigh Leopards

Saints had all three point scorers in the lowest-scoring game of the round. A game again tainted by John Asiata’s exploits, the league leaders showed their class and professionalism to win a tough fixture.

Morgan Knowles’ performance gave him maximum points in a 12-4 win. Try scorer Jack Welsby took two, after opening the scoring in the first half, and Matt Whitley, in his first season for Saints after his switch from Catalans Dragons, takes home the final point.

Warrington Wolves v Castleford Tigers

Warrington also had all three point scorers in their game against Castleford, after picking up a 30-8 win. The Tigers did strike first, through Josh Simm, but Matty Ashton got his side ahead, before Philbin, Dufty and Thewlis extended their lead in a comfortable victory.

Matt Dufty made 231 metres in game, the highest of any player in Round Three, and he takes maximum points here. Young Leon Hayes took two, while Matty Ashton’s scores earn him the final point.

Wigan Warriors v Huddersfield Giants

The world champions won 30-16 in their tie, and when 18 points ahead early on, following two Liam Marshall tries and one from Bevan French. Despite an attempt at a Giants comeback, three more tries, including a third for Marshall, gave Wigan the win.

Unsurprisingly, Liam Marshall’s hat-trick got him three points, while Brad O’Neill and Kaide Ellis made it a clean sweep for the Warriors.

Leeds Rhinos v Catalans Dragons

An excellent Leeds performance earned them a victory in a tightly-fought contest against last year’s finalists. Ash Handley and Harry Newman’s tries were cancelled out by Chris Satae’s try and Arthur Mourgue’s boot, but another from Handley made it a great night for the Rhinos.

Brodie Croft continued his excellent start to life at Headlingley with three points, while Harry Newman took two. Chris Satae’s good performance, despite his side’s defeat, earned him the last point. Handley may feel aggrieved to not be named here, after his two tries.

Salford Red Devils v Hull KR

Salford expertly defeated one of the league’s early form sides. Deon Cross and Chris Hankinson had them 12-0 at the half, but Peta Hiku and Jez Litten pulled Rovers back to within two points. After converting the two tries, however, Marc Sneyd’s two penalties and one drop goal ensured a home victory for the Red Devils.

The man-of-the-moment made it a second MOTM performance in a row, and Marc Sneyd snapped up maximum points. Chris Atkin and Kallum Watkins round out a Salford 1-2-3.

Hull FC v London Broncos

An early-season six-pointer at the wrong end of the table was narrowly won by a Hull side that struggled against the league’s poorest-performing side. The teams scored five goals each, but Hull’s Darnell McIntosh converted four of them, while Oli Leyland could only convert two. London looked like they’d snatch it until Morgan Smith’s late try for the hosts.

Matty Russell, on loan from Warrington, scored and takes three points. Team-mate and captain Danny Houghton’s 58 tackles got him two points, while Hakim Miloudi, who scored twice for the Broncos, took one.

Overall Man of Steel rankings

Marc Sneyd celebrates a drop-goal against Salford. He wears a red shirt and can be seen, from behind, with arms outstretched.

After two wonderful performances, Marc Sneyd has raced to the top of the Man of Steel rankings, standing alone on six points. Saints duo Jack Welsby and Morgan Knowles are close behind on five, while Nene Macdonald, in his debut season for Salford, has four. Ash Handley and Mikey Lewis are amongst those on three, and every player with three or more points can be found listed here.
