Last week, the news broke that Hull KR forward George King has reportedly been offered to Super League clubs.

It was Love Rugby League who first broke the news after a flurry of rumours on social media had suggested that the Irish international was destined for Castleford Tigers.

Being named as 18th man for the Robins’ huge game against Wigan Warriors only added fuel to the fire for those rumours.

On this, Peters tried to bat them away: “George has been out for a while with his injury, and the side that played was pretty much the side that has been playing.

“We’ve got to reward those guys. George came back a week earlier last week. He had one stint and with his hamstring, that’s all the physios wanted.”

He’s contracted at Craven Park until 2027, signing a new deal just last year.

However, if King is indeed on the move, he’ll be an attractive proposition to plenty of clubs, and here are some potential destinations.

Three potential destinations for George King

Castleford Tigers

Usually, you’d be looking at specific weaknesses in teams’ squads when doing a piece on potential transfer movements, but at the moment, the Tigers need all the bodies they can get.

They’ve even been unable to name a full 21-man squad twice this season, due to their extensive injury problems.

They are also, potentially, looking to bring in some ‘marquee’ players – and King would absolutely fit the bill.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds earlier this month, head coach Craig Lingard said: “We’ll secure the Super League status with the club doing what they need to do off the field and then we can start bringing some bigger name people in, some sort of marquee names that we want to bring in.

“We might be able to do some of that this season, hopefully, we can.”

This can only be possible with Martin Jepson’s recent investment, and it’s not the most appealing place in Super League at the moment, but it makes sense for the club to be pushing this one.

Hull Daily Mail is reporting that Castleford are indeed one of the clubs that have shown interest.

He may well become the third Ireland international in the squad, alongside Innes and Louis Senior.

Salford Red Devils

Brad Singleton and King Vunivayawa may well remain at the club – they’re contracted beyond this season – but there’s no harm in having three good props fighting for a space in the starting 13.

Paul Rowley committing to the club, despite an approach from Hull FC, showed that he plans on building something longer-term with the Red Devils, and potentially that he’s been promised major signings for next year, despite not really being backed in that fashion yet during his time there.

King should suit their fast-paced style of rugby, and despite mixed results this season, they should be an exciting prospect for any player searching for a new club.

After losing big names ahead of this year, they should also have plenty of space left to pay whatever salary he wants, amidst competition from other clubs.

They’ll want to take their side to the next level after building something with Rowley over the past few years; George King could help them get there.

Leigh Leopards

Tom Amone and Ben Nakubwai, King’s main would-be rivals at Leigh for a starting prop role, are both out of contract at the end of the 2024 season

The fiery John Asiata, at loose forward, is also out of contract after this year – and his role is one that George King could fill as well.

They could still extend their contracts further, and remain with the Leopards next year, but the club have no obligation to do so, and may choose to make the decision to bring King in.

Even if those three did extend, there will still be plenty of space for forwards to come in, as at least one or two of Jack Hughes, Matt Davis, Oli Holmes, Nathan Wilde, Tom Nisbet, Jacob Gannon and Jacob Jones, the other forwards out-of-contract after 2024, will surely be moving on.

Derek Beaumont, as we all know, loves to make a statement – and this would be a statement signing for the Leopards.
