“They should have won that game” – Hull KR boss reacts to narrow loss

Hull KR

Hull KR suffered their second straight defeat in Super League tonight and head coach Willie Peters has reacted claiming that his side “should have won” the game.

Warrington Wolves rolled into town and at times rolled Hull KR off the pitch with the Robins shooting themselves in the foot for long periods of the first half.

Sam Burgess’ side went 10-0 up early on with tries through the returning George Williams and winger Matty Ashton, before Hull KR got a foothold.

The Robins scored through Tyrone May and Ryan Hall before being sucker-punched by a Connor Wrench try on the eve of half time courtesy of a dynamic Matt Dufty play.

KR came out of the blocks better in the second half with scores from Oliver Gildart and Tom Opacic but a bombed chance by Jez Litten ultimately came back to bite them when Warrington went ahead late on.

That winner came from a training ground scrum play that was finished off by Matt Dufty who earned Man of the Match honours for the second week in a row, and condemned Hul KR to their second defeat in a row.

Willie Peters has since spoken to Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks explaining that Rovers should have seen the game out.

“Yeah, we had a poor start, and then obviously the back end that first half but I thought we played extremely well, I thought we put ourselves in a position to win, but we just found ways to hand the momentum back,” Peters explained.

Asked if his side should have won, he responded: “Yeah, we should have, yeah, there’s no doubt.

“I just said to them that, I’m gutted for them, because the effort that they put in, they should have won that game.

“There’s some learnings there, I think last plays would have been better and just some last passes, scoring tries, 2v1s, that sort of stuff. If we execute those, we’re probably going to win.”

Peters also confirmed that the club will “slowly” turn Jez Litten into an 80 minute player with the hooker not on the field for the two tries that weren’t converted, two scores that would have won them the game 24-22 had they been kicked.

Peters stated: “Obviously, I thought Matty did a good job as well. Each week, we’ll just see where he’s at. We don’t want to overdo him, but if he can play 80 minutes like he did against Leeds then obviously that’ll benefit us.”
