Super League Disciplinary: Four clubs face massive suspension worries

Super League Round Five was set to be a massive one with two clashes between teams joint top of the league to kick-start the round including a massive clash between rivals Leeds Rhinos and St Helens but among the drama were some Super League disciplinary concerns.

The action started however at the AJ Bell Stadium where Salford Red Devils hosted Wigan Warriors. Salford ended the unbeaten start of St Helens the week before and were looking to do the same to the Super League Champions on Thursday night.

They battled back from 10-0 down to lead 12-10 after two superb tries created by Marc Sneyd’s boot but things would stall for the Red Devils five minutes from time when Sneyd inadvertently set up a winning try for Wigan with a short dropout. Wigan went on to win 22-12.

There was a similar turnaround on Friday night when Leeds Rhinos started the game against St Helens in brilliant fashion and took an 8-0 lead. But the ran out of gas and the Saints claimed an 18-8 win.

On Saturday, Hull KR reshuffled their side to move Niall Evalds to fullback in a move that saw them ease to victory over Huddersfield Giants.

Their rivals Hull FC didn’t have it so good however. They were blown away by Leigh Leopards who claimed their first win of the Super League season. The final score was 54-4.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Castleford Tigers produced a valiant effort in defeat to Catalans Dragons and on Sunday it was a similar story for the London Broncos against Warrington Wolves.

There are a number of Super League disciplinary concerns for clubs ahead of the Challenge Cup which of course is do or die for Super League clubs.

Salford Red Devils could have a few problems such as a Kallum Watkins tip tackle, a Shane Wright and Gil Dudson shoulder charge as well a Marc Sneyd head contact identified on Sky Sports.

As for Leeds Rhinos, they could have problems for incidents St Helens fans were left complaining about on social media including a swinging arm from Justin Sangare and head contact from Mickael Goudemand. Leeds may feel Sione Mata’utia deserves a ban for his late hit on James Bentley.

Hull FC will have some concerns over Franklin Pele’s yellow card for a late hit and a tip tackle from Ligi Sao.
