Super League coach says his side could be eight points adrift by the time huge clash comes

After losing again yesterday, Mark Applegarth spoke about the effort from his players.

He said his side need to treat every game like it is a cup final in terms of effort.

“There’s some players out there giving it everything they’ve got. You’re looking at Jai Whitbread, that effort Lee Kershaw put on that tackle. You can see how much it means to a few of them. Jay Pitts, I thought Sam Hewitt’s had another cracking game and I’ve probably missed a couple but they’re the lads that I need to build this team around,” he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“They’re the sort of people that envisage what I want Wakefield to be about and at the moment I don’t think there’s enough of us in terms of that quality and efforts.

“Every single week for us has got to be like a cup final. That’s the reality of the situation.”

On the horizon they have Hull FC in a game that if the league stays the same will see the bottom two meet.

Hull have lost the last seven games but Applegarth can’t focus on that because otherwise they could find themselves eight points adrift:

“People keep asking me if that Hull FC game is going to be a massive one, well it’s not if they go on to win their next two and we’ve put all our eggs in one basket because they’re going to be eight points clear aren’t they?”

Applegarth also answered whether he is the right man for the job:

“I’ve been asked this question since round two and it’s a fair valid point. Yes, I do. It’s frustrating and I’m giving you my thoughts just 30 minutes after the game but course I think I’m the right man, it’s just a difficult process that I’ve got to go through.”
