Super League Attendances: Huge crowd for Wigan Warriors but two others fall short of 5,000

Round 20 of Super League provided rugby league fans with more brilliant action starting on Thursday night as Huddersfield Giants beat Hull FC, Friday saw a class St Helens and Leeds Rhinos clash, the Battle of the Borough between Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards stood out on Saturday before Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves wrapped the round up.

The Thursday night action saw Huddersfield extend their winning streak to three as they defeated Tony Smith’s Hull FC 19-12, the Ollie Russell drop goal putting the game beyond all doubt.

Friday night brought St Helens versus Leeds with the teams meeting for a third time this season in Super League.

The previous match-ups had seen each side win one game a piece, both by a margin of one point, but Friday’s game was sealed by a score of 22-18 courtesy of some Jack Welsby brilliance as the full-back raced away to score his second and what was ultimately the winner.

Friday night’s other fixture showed that Hull KR had no Challenge Cup semi-final hangover as they swept aside Castleford Tigers, heaping the pressure on Andy Last’s men at the bottom of the table.

It’s also tight at the top of the table as we saw on Saturday with third placed Wigan Warriors beating second placed neighbours Leigh Leopards in order to leapfrog them into second place, the pick of the plays between an Abbas Miski hattrick –  two of which came through intercepts.

Saturday evening saw Salford Red Devils in Perpignan and Paul Rowley’s men fell to a fifth straight defeat as top of the table Catalans ran riot winning 42-0.

That might have been the most brutal result of the weekend until Sunday when Wakefield Trinity continued their amazing run of form to hammer Warrington Wolves 42-6, Trinity dominating from start to finish to pull level on points with Castleford Tigers in the relegation race.

It was a massively dramatic round of rugby and the fans made it all the better with some impressive attendances.

Hull KR don’t announce their weekly attendances but Craven Park will have been close to five figures full with the club on a true high at the moment.

Saints versus Leeds surpassed that 10,000 mark whilst the Battle of the Borough went beyond 15,000 to be the most impressive figure of the round.

The travelling Salford support helped Catalans post an attendance just shy of 10,000 as well.

Despite the brilliant displays on show the first and last games of the rounds failed to meet 5,000.
