Star man could face mammoth ban after Challenge Cup charge

Featherstone Rovers star McKenzie Yei faces a mammoth ban for his tackle against Leigh Leopards in the Challenge Cup.

He was one of 10 players charged from Round Six of the Challenge Cup which was an even split between Super League players and Championship players.

Featherstone though did have three players charged but Yei has picked up a Grade E charge for a dangerous throw.

This means he could face a big ban of up to five games as well as a hefty fine. He will face a tribunal to determine his fate on April 2nd alongside any Championship appeals rising from the games.

Speaking after the game on the Sportsman, Leigh Leopards Head Coach had his say on the game: “Yeah a little bit frustrated at times just with the mistakes we made to keep Featherstone in the game. But overall happy mate, we got through, that’s all we needed to do today.”

He was quick to praise hat-trick hero Umyla Hanley: “He was very much it wasn’t about me but scoring three tries with three looks at the line as he did before half-time. He’s been outstanding through our preseason and the couple of games that he has played with us since coming in for Tom Briscoe has been absolutely brilliant. But you know he’ll admit this himself there’s still a few mistakes there that he can work hard on and he’s doing that but you know doing a great job.”

And of course his returning son Lachlan Lam: “Yeah he didn’t get on until the 50th minute around which is the plan but certainly added that little bit of spark once he came in you know and I think it could have been a little bit a different outcome there had we held the ball towards the back end of the game there but it wasn’t to be like I said just happy that we’ve got the win and progressed through now to the quarterfinals.”

Lastly he added: “I felt last week there was a step in the right direction for us against Hull in the Super League and today there was some good signs for us. I think it’s about making sure that the next time we get to the quarter finals or the Challenge Cup we’ll just need to build some rhythm through the Super League games that we’ve got. So we’ve got Salford next week obviously but I take a lot of confidence out of the day for a lot of the players. I think the more we play together as a group, remembering that we didn’t play a round 2 as well against Wigan because they had the World Club Challenge, I think the more time we play together as a group I think we can only get better.”
