Sky Sports pundits disagree over Jonny Lomax incident

One of the major talking points last night was the decision to show Jonny Lomax a green card which forced him from the field after a hit from Jack Ashworth.

However, this moment had St Helens fans up in arms. The Saints had three players shown cards for late hits against Leeds Rhinos and were without Morgan Knowles through suspension for that offence.

However, Saints got no penalty for the incident and it led to an a disagreement between Terry O’Connor and Jon Wilkin.

Wilkin said:

“Did he get hit late? He gets hit late. The problem we have in the game at the minute is Jonny Lomax doesn’t stay down.

“I’ll take you back to Leeds against St Helens, Richie Myler in that situation laid on the floor twice, drew penalties, drew attention.

“Jonny Lomax maybe doesn’t do that, we have to pay credit to him in the main for not doing that.

“It’s a penalty though. They are giving penalties for that all year. If you hit someone late, it’s a penalty.”

O’Connor meanwhile felt it wasn’t a penalty.

“I think he was committed, if you watch that again, I don’t think that is a penalty. He is set, he cannot pull out of that tackle.”

To this Wilkin said: “It is irrelevant what you’re saying” implying that such logic doesn’t apply following the crackdown on late hits.

O’Connor simply said: “I disagree.”
