Sky Sports pundit speaks on controversial Wigan Warriors call

Sky Sports pundit Kyle Amor has suggested two players were diving to secure penalties for their side in Super League Round Five.

This came as Salford Red Devils came short of defeating Super League and World Champions Wigan Warriors.

The Red Devils battled hard in the first half and came close to a number of tries against the only side left in Super League let to lose.

Their best chance came as Ryan Brierley took an offload and chipped over the head of Jai Field. As he kicked the ball further ahead, Harry Smith swooped and accidentally took out Brierley which was the view of official Chris Kendall hence no penalty try was given.

Then shortly after, the Super League Champions took the lead when Liam Marshall collected a lovely kick behind from Jai Field to score.

At the start of the second half, Wigan extended their lead out to 10-0 with Abbas Miski touching down from a lovely ball outwide from Bevan French.

However, Salford Red Devils battled back with Marc Sneyd setting up two tries with the boot for Sam Stone and Tim Lafai which gave Salford the lead 12-10.

Unfortunately, Sneyd would set up another try with the boot but this time for Wigan as his short drop out was taken by Jake Wardle to score.

Wigan wrapped up the win with a try from French.

Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils duo diving?

During the game there were a number of interesting incidents which sparked widespread debate throughout the contest.

One was a moment when Wigan Warriors claimed a penalty after Bevan French was taken out. The right call but interestingly, Sky Sports commentator Kyle Amor said he “made a meal” of the incident seemingly suggesting that he dived.

Furthermore, when Marc Sneyd was the victim of a similar incident Amor accused him of “doing the same” as French.

This comes as a lot of players have been accused of “milking” penalties and “diving” like footballers throughout this Super League season and in recent Super League seasons as well.

Either way the game was a brilliant contest between two top teams moving forward.

Key decision “the correct call”

Another big call was the decision to not award Salford Red Devils a penalty try in the first half for the Brierley and Smith incident.

Sky Sports commentator Dave Woods said, “I think the referee made the right decision there” and Amor agreed with the call.

Amor said: “They are competing for that ball. I don’t know what else Harry Smith is supposed to do other than make a play for the ball.”
