Sam Tomkins brutal Leeds Rhinos comments vindicated by controversy

Sam Tomkins

Leeds Rhinos claimed a vital win over Catalans Dragons in Round Three of the Betfred Super League but it wasn’t a game without controversy.

James Bentley was at the epi-centre of some flashpoints the main one of which was an altercation with Tariq Sims.

Bentley was hit in the head by Sims as he made a tackle. Bentley pulled out of the challenge upset by the contact and caught him with an elbow.

This was a widely controversial incident. After the game, Rohan Smith was seen on Sky Sports talking to him prompting Sam Tomkins to say:

“I think he’s saying you’re a very lucky man. He shouldn’t have been on the field. A clear elbow to someone’s head. I don’t know what the referees were thinking in saying that was a play on.

“So yeah, I imagine Rohan Smith’s saying, ‘You got lucky, don’t do it again.’

“I think for every good thing he does, he something stupid. I think that’s his issue. He’s not got consistency. It’s not what he does when he’s got the ball in hand. It’s just that he has these brain explosions regularly.

“He’s a decent player. He’s not outstanding or a real top end player, but he comes up with too many daft things.”

Leeds Rhinos star banned

These comments by Sam Tomkins have been vindicated by the fact Bentley was charged and banned for the incident by the Match Review Panel unlike opponent Sims.

He will now miss the game against Leigh Leopards after a one match ban.

Following Round Three of the Betfred Super League, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:

Adam Milner (Huddersfield Giants) – Grade B Head Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher end of grade)
Esan Marsters (Huddersfield Giants) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – ÂŁ250 Fine
John Asiata (Leigh Leopards) – Grade A Dangerous Contact – Not applicable
Konrad Hurrell (St Helens) – Grade B Head Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher end of grade)
James Bentley (Leeds Rhinos) – Grade B Striking – 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher end of grade)

So it’s probably because of Tomkins. Shouting his gob off, that drew it to the attention of the committee. Catalans ( his old club, + mates ) started it, Bentley, finished it. Tomkins can’t help his self, he was the same when he played. “ please ref, he did that ref, “ sky are going to lose a lot of viewers with him, sounds to me like another stevo, living off his past.
