Former Wigan Warriors man agrees deal with Huddersfield Giants

Sam Halsall of Huddersfield Giants

Young outside-back Sam Halsall has revealed that he’s signed a contract extension with Huddersfield Giants.

Speaking on The Bench with Jenna and Jon, he revealed the news.

He said: “A couple of weeks ago I’ve just extended with Huddersfield until the end of the 2027 season.

“It was a pretty easy decision really. The club came with the offer and there wasn’t really any doubt in my mind of where I wanted to be, where I wanted to play.

“They put a lot of belief in me last year, I hadn’t played loads of games for Wigan but Ian Watson saw something in me and I was grateful for the opportunity that they gave me.”

Halsall signed for the Giants on a three-year deal ahead of the 2023 season, and would have been moving into his final year on that deal next season.

However, this has added an extra two years onto the 22-year-old’s deal at the Kirklees Stadium.

Previously, he went through the academy ranks with Wigan, before making his first-team debut in 2020, in a 42-0 derby defeat to St Helens.

Speaking on his move away from the Warriors, he said:

“It was pretty challenging because I’d only recently signed a three-year deal with Wigan, I hadn’t even started that deal yet, and a proposal came from Huddersfield.

“Wigan wanted Wardle, and Huddersfield wanted me to go that way along with Jake Bibby.

“It was pretty tough at first because Wigan’s all I’d known.”

He had a successful loan deal with Newcastle Thunder, scoring 13 tries in 11 games in 2022, but had never been elsewhere permanently.

Halsall had a number of impressive performances in 2023, including a special performance in which he scored a hat-trick against Castleford Tigers.

A smart move for Huddersfield Giants?

Sam Halsall looks like he’s got an exciting future ahead: at just 22 years old, he’s already got extensive Super League experience, and his try-scoring exploits have proved to be a valuable asset for the Giants.

Despite the quality of Adam Swift and Elliot Wallis, he’s making plenty of appearances at outside back, scoring five tries this season, including two each against Castleford Tigers and Hull FC.

The Giants have been in fine form this season, with impressive results against Leeds Rhinos and Catalans Dragons recently adding to an impressive number of points against Hull FC and Castleford Tigers, and Halsall staying at the club could extend their good fortunes.

Tying another player, alongside Harry Rushton, down to a long-term deal at the Kirklees Stadium should bring some stability.

As well as an easy decision for the player, it was surely an easy decision for the club, who may now look to continue to keep players at the club.
