Salford Red Devils have been looking to move out of their AJ Bell Stadium ever since it was mooted that rugby union side Sale Sharks and Salford City FC wanted to move in as joint owners.
However, both Sale and Salford City are not prepared to move in until the Red Devils can find a new home.
As such, Salford City, who play in the English League Two, will continue playing at the Peninsula Stadium during the 2022-23 season with talks regarding a proposed move to AJ Bell Stadium still ongoing.
In October 2021, Sharks chief executive Sid Sutton outlined his desire to buy the ground with Salford City to buy the ground but an offer would not be made until the Red Devils found another home – though the football side wants to be in the AJ Bell by 2023.
A club statement from Salford City stated: “We are optimistic that a deal will still be done and in principle things are agreed, there are just some particulars that still need working out in respect of the future of Salford Red Devils.”
Executive chairman of the Red Devils, Paul King, had previously said this on the stadium proceedings: “The stadium is going, and we will have a new landlord within the next 12 months. However, we are here for the 2022 season 100%,” King said.
The Red Devils cannot afford to be part of a joint bid for AJ Bell Stadium, so they were were considering a move to the Peninsula Stadium, which would have seen the rugby league club swap grounds with Salford City.
Salford Red Devils’ rental agreement ends in 2023.
