Reports: International centre joins Super League side

Leeds Rhinos Maika Sivo Waqa Blake

Fijian centre Waqa Blake is set to join a Super League side after having decided on his future following his NRL release.

That’s per The League Scene Pod who have broken the news that Blake is destined for Super League following his release from NRL side Parramatta Eels.

Blake had been with the Eels since 2019 having previously played for Penrith Panthers, racking up over 150 NRL appearances during his nine seasons.

The 29-year-old was released from the Eels this off-season though and had been expected to switch codes to rugby union.

That was until today’s news from the League Scene Pod who report that Blake is headed for the Super League, taking up the remaining quota spot at an unnamed side.

Blake clocked up 62 tries during his 164 NRL appearances and has scored three tries in five games on the international scene for Fiji, most recently representing his nation during the Pacific Championships.

League Scene Pod broke the news of his impending Super League switch via X, formerly Twitter, as they posted the news.

It read: “We’ve been told Waqa Blake has a new home and it is NOT rugby Union.

“Waqa Blake is headed for St Helens in the Super League where he’ll fulfil the final quota spot.”

This now begs the question as to which Super League side Blake is set to join with St Helens being among the favourites given their need of a centre.

The Red Vee left the number three shirt vacant following Will Hopoate’s release and retirement, indicating that they intended to fill the shirt with a new signing.

Catalans Dragons are another side that could go w9th a centre following the loss of Adam Keighran, however they’re currently stuck with Sio Taukeiaho after his failed medical put his NRL switch on hold.

As such Steve McNamara’s side find themselves unable to bring anybody in until the prop forward finds a new club, which is looking unlikely.

London Broncos have quota spots available too but the wording of League Scene’s report in reference to fulfilling ‘the final quota spot’ would indicate it is a team with just one spot available.

That would likely be St Helens given the positional need and also the fact that Blake would find himself joining a Super League challenging side, which would be an attractive proposition.
