Owen Farrell’s future unclear as union side deny any links

As captain of England’s rugby union side and one of the most talented players of his generation Own Farrell is always in the news, and that’s been no different of late with strong reports linking him with a move away from England.

It had been reported that Farrell was set to sign with French side Racing 92, something that would cut short any rumours linking him to a cross code switch to rugby league.

Of course Farrell is the son of former Man of Steel winner and Wigan Warriors legend Andy Farrell, Owen even playing the 13-man code as a youngster before his dad’s code switch.

As such there have always been links that Farrell could make the switch to rugby league and make a move to a Super League side, none of those rumours stronger than this past off-season.

Previous interviews from Farrell have indicated he is a huge fan of the sport whilst plenty of rugby league players, including the likes of fellow Wiganer Sam Tomkins, have stated how adept Farrell would be to the 13-man code.

Therefore when it was reported late last week that Farrell was set to leave his Premiership Rugby side Saracens and make the switch to France to play for Racing 92, the rugby league links died.

However Racing 92 have now come out to release a statement firmly denying any interest in Farrell, refuting that any agreement has been made which could leave the door open still for the 32-year-old.

Racing 92 posted on their club website and via their social media channels the short and blunt message.

It read: “Racing 92 is regularly under a lot of speculation regarding movements within its squad. We are delighted with the appeal of our club Racing 92.

“However, we deny any agreement regarding the English player Owen Farrell.”

It’s unclear what this means for the Englishman’s future in club rugby however he has already confirmed that he won’t be playing in the upcoming Six Nations tournament, the playmaker stepping back from international rugby for the time being.

That decision was one that had sparked more rumours about him making the switch to rugby league but as yet there has been no solid movement on that, however this statement from Racing 92 does cast a question on where and what next for Farrell.
